We just got back to our room after having spent the evening at Keith's cousin Lisa and her husband Dan's home in Powhatan Virgina. They have 19 acres of spectacular horse property and a beautiful home. It was at one time a plantation that was later sub divided into parcels. They have 4 horses , 3 goats, 5 dogs, and 20 cats. Needless to say Lisa is an animal lover. I liked her right away. Her son Ryan and Keith's uncle Bob who is Lisa's dad were there. Keith's cousin Steve , who lives outside of Washington DC and his wife Linda came as well. Keith had not seen Lisa in over 40 years, so it was very sweet. We took a tour of the property, and they have their own woods! The barn that Lisa designed is nicer than many homes. It really was unlike anything I have ever seen. This family is very musical. After we had Chinese take out all the boys took out their instruments and played together. Ryan used to be the band leader for the Glen Miller Orchresta, Uncle Bob plays the trumpet, Steve plays mandolin, Keith played his guitar. Linda,Lisa and I hung out and talked listening to the boys in the next room. I am really happy that Keith has reconnected with these good folks. I do believe we will come back to visit, next time for a bit longer. We also really hope they come out to Cali.
Virginia is green like the rest of the South but has a different feel. It's hard to explain but as we drove through the back roads it was easy to imagine what it may have been like 150 years ago during the civil war. I also imagined how terrifying it must have been for slaves trying to escape through the thick woods.
Tomorrow we are going to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's estate and Luray Caverns.
Peace out.
